BREAKING NEWS; Catholic Church Dismisses Outspoken Rev. Sister
The Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters (MOPHAS) in Auchi, Edo state, has dismissed its member, Reverend Sister Kinse Shako Annastasia.Annastasia disclosed this on her Facebook post on Wednesday, adding that she was given a token of N100,000 with her belongings already packed outside her room and her habit taken from her.A trained formator and graduate assistant in the Department of Software Engineering at Veritas University Abuja, Annastasia did not state clearly why she was dismissed from the congregation. Her post read, “Who no get person, get God.“I wish to let the public know that on this day, 24th day of September 2025, I received a letter of dismissal from the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters, dated 21 July 2025. A token of hundred thousand Naira (#100,000) was given to me.When I got to the Convent, I Met that my belongings were already packed outside the room I stayed in, and the religious habits were taken away. I pulled the one I had on and submitted it as well. Therefore, I am currently not in possession of any property of the Congregation.”Annastasia had on August 24 made a post on her Facebook account challenging the catholic church to do more to protect the Reverend Sisters in the church, emphasising that Religious Sisters are neither ornaments in habits nor commodities for priests to use at will.Religious Sisters are not ornaments in Habits. We are not commodities for priests to use at will, nor are we mistresses in veils. We are women called by God, consecrated to service, prayer, and the mission of the Church,” she wrote.Yet too often, behind stained glass windows and polished marble altars, we are treated as less. A priest once told me without shame: “Sisters are meant to be priests’ wives.” He did not say it in jest. He meant it. And he acted on it,” she added.Meanwhile, on August 29, the congregation in a letter co-signed by the Superior General of MOPHAS, Sr. Maryanne Ogwokhademhe and Sr. Rosemary Odion, the Secretary General, clarified that Annastasia is no longer a member of the Congregation, citing that her claims are unfounded.“Our attention has been drawn to the different publications on social media by former Sr. Kinse Shako Annastasia who continues to present herself as a member of our Religious Congregation.“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state clearly that former Sr. Kinse Shako Annastasia, ceased to be a member of our Congregation when she defected from the Catholic Faith and embraced the Islamic Religion,” MOPHAS officials said. The letter also detailed Annastasia’s alleged abandonment of Religious Life, and how the MOPHAS members were “deeply pained” by her renunciation of Christian faith.“Annastasia discarded her religious habit, and declared her conversion to Islam via her Facebook page,” the congregation leadership said. The letter also noted that in one of the widely circulated posts allegedly made by Annastasia, she said, “After deep reflection, and prayer, I have embraced Islam…, Call me Salamatu. I am no longer a Christian. My account is not hacked. I am now a Muslim convert.”The MOPHAS leadership also noted in the letter that all efforts to reach out to Annastasia after she announced her conversion to Islam were met with rejection. However, Annastasia in her recent post appreciated everyone who has been with her throughout her trying time, reassuring her catholic membership and love for her church.“From my heart, I sincerely thank everyone who has stood by me in prayer and encouragement through this time. Your love and support mean more than words can express.“I am a Catholic! and I love my Church! Above all, I place my trust in God, whose throne can never be shaken and who never abandons His own,” she wrote.
